In an area so filled with family and newborn photographers, it’s a bit harder to stand out and really get noticed. So you can imagine my surprise when I was contacted by Voyage Baltimore Magazine to be featured in one of their Daily Inspiration articles.

Hi Kim, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
Hi there! My name is Kim Whipps, and I’m a Baltimore born mom of 5, and married to my best friend and business partner. Raising kids and running a business has been interesting but I wouldn’t change my life for the world.

I started my photography business in 2006. I have always loved photography, but the passion grew in 2004 when my first child was born. I became obsessed with documenting her little features and personality and started reading everything I could get my hands on regarding photography and editing. It started with a random inquiry from a friend of a friend, asking if I would take pictures of their baby and it snowballed from there. Before I knew it, I was able to help support my growing family within a few years of learning to fine-tune my craft and price accordingly.

I’ve experimented with photographing many different genres throughout my career but I always feel most at home with babies and families. There’s just something about seeing the connection between a parent and their child. It’s such a rush.

Photographing families is such a personal business. I have grown to become good friends with so many of my clients. I’ve watched their kids grow and some are close to graduating now.! This business has been so much more than “work” to me. It’s most definitely a lifestyle and has brought me so much joy.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Oh it most definitely has not been a smooth road, but it always works out in the end. I’m a firm believer in there’s a reason for everything.

In 2017, my website crashed at the same time I was going through a divorce and name change. Silly me, thought it was no big deal and I could get things back up and running in no time. I had YEARS of blogs posts and SEO poured into that site and I was so optimistic in thinking that I could quickly regain my position on google. What I neglected to remember was, the industry was incredibly saturated compared to when I first began in 2006. I made a mistake in not redirecting my old domain to my new website as well and was relying on word of mouth and Facebook/Instagram. It is my biggest regret.

I’m still working on my website. Life has just been so crazy between raising 5 kids and shooting/editing. I learned the hard way. Take care of your online presence. Hopefully, by the time this interview publishes, my new website will be ready for the most part. I just have a ton of blog posts and photos to add.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I photograph children, families, and newborns. I am known for growing with a family from birth and beyond. My style is bright with true-to-life colors as I prefer to keep editing natural.

I have lots of things I could say I am proud of, but if I have to narrow it down, it’s being told time and time again that I put people at ease when they are in front of my lens. That makes me so happy. It also makes me proud to walk into a home of a family and see my work hanging in every room of their house. I have been awarded Best Family Photographer in Baltimore but I swear, nothing beats seeing your work on someone’s walls.

Lastly, I’d have to say what sets me apart is that I try hard to stay away from photography trends. I have seen them come and go and I want to make sure my work flows well together over the years. I want to keep the focus on the child, not the props, and I like my editing to be clean, crisp, and colorful.

I don’t want to copy and paste the whole thing, so head on over and read the whole article here at the Voyage Baltimore Magazine. – Meet Kim Whipps
